Synchronize Getting Things Gnome! with your android phone
At this point of your life you should know about Getting Things Gnome! and how easy it makes your life!
A port of GTG for android is in my perspective far a way as there is no native python support, etc. So how can you have your GTG tasks on your android phone?
Easy!
- Signup for a (free) Remember The Milk account
- Activate GTG’s Remember The Milk plugin and sync your tasks with RTM
- Install Astrid on your android phone (available on android market)
- Sync Astrid with RTM

Remember The Milk allows you to manage your tasks online. Just go to http://www.rememberthemilk.com and signup for a (free) account.
Activate GTG’s Remember The Milk plugin and sync your tasks with RTM
Thanks to Luca Invernizzi’s GTG plugin, Remember The Milk, it’s possible to sync GTG with Remember The Milk. The plugin is currently at version 0.3.
Plugin for synchronising Getting Things Gnome! with the web service Remember the milk (http://www.rememberthemilk.com)
Please note that task descriptions are not synchronized in this version.
Legal note: This product uses the Remember The Milk API but
is not endorsed or certified by Remember, The Milk.
Luca’s RTM plugin is shipped with GTG so if you have the latest version you only need to activate the plugin.
After activating the plugin you only need to sync the tasks between GTG and RTM.
Install Astrid on your android phone (available on android market)
This step is actually very easy. Just open the Android Market and search for Astrid and install it.
Sync Astrid with RTM
Open Astrid and in the Synchronization menu Activate the Remember The Milk service and also activate the Main Menu Shortcut.
The Sync shortcut in the main menu comes up handy to sync Astrid with RTM with minimum effort. Then all you need is to hit the sync button.
That’s it. This is as simple as it can get. No more excuses for not being organized!
One more thing, by default Remember The Milk will send email notification of tasks on their deadline and it’s also a nice feature to have.
I’ll leave you guys with one more screen shot of the Astrid’s home widget that also comes in handy.
Finally and for the just for those of you who are wondering, I’m using…
- … Getting Things Gnome! development version (latest trunk version)
- … CyanogenMod 4.2.14.1. I also suggest a look at http://www.openandroidteam.com for the latest android version (2.1_r2).

Thx for the nice hint!
What a pity that RTM doesn’t support subtasks and
task-description sync
But still better than nothing.

Until we have GTG on android it’s a solution.
If anyone has another one, please came forward

Thanks mate! Although I had both of the necessary applications, I did not have – or knew, for that matter – Remember the milk.
Lovely.

Some features are still missing, but I think it is a good solution.
Astrid doesn’t have a workview so no need for the subtask feature right now but the text description is very appreciated. I think Luca will add it to the plugin some time soon.

Thanks a lot, this tutorial works perfectly. I was looking for an open source solution to maintain gtd-like tasks on a linux computer and sync with an android phone, and this tutorial convinced me to give GTG a try!

Astrid is on the verge of supporting sub-tasks, if this link
http://getsatisfaction.com/todoroo/topics/sub_task_and_customizable_recurring_tasks?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=reply_notification
is to be believed. So we just need RTM to follow suit, or ‘mw88′ to write some direct syncing code (http://karlojez.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/getting-things-gnome-web-the-penultimate-report/), and the GTG tasks to/from Android could end up being an elegant solution.
Here’s hoping
(I wish I could help, but my programming skills end at C)

Sweet goodness, thank you! I was dreading a buggy linux hack, and you served up a simple solution. I’m trying out the RTM app. Has anyone compared it with Astrid?
Greg
Astrid no longer supports RTM. They do offer on their website an older version which does.

I confess that I no longer use Astrid. I’m not currently using any software because of the difficulty on syncing between devices. Now I only use GTG! on my computers and symlink the ~/.local/share/gtg do the ~/Dropbox/gtg. This was the best solution that I found. Dropbox rocks!
Anyway, let me know if there are other apps available that will make any kind of integration with GTG!.

I was searching on market for some note taking application that used Dropbox for storage. I found (amongst others) Todo.txt Touch. It costs $2, but it’s also open-source so I guess you could build it yourself. It’s built on Todo.txt CLI, and you can read about both projects here: http://todotxt.com/
I agree, Dropbox rocks
It uses a very simple notation for tasks. Each task is on it’s own row, you can name contexts with @ and projects with +. I’m planning on making a very primitive bash script that imports those rows (and then remove them) into GTG using gtg_new_task and Todo.txt CLI.
I’m using version 0.3 of GTG from the PPA right now so the minor issue with this is that the task window stays open. Browsing the code repository it seems you’re working on a CLI for GTG which maybe fixes this annoyance, but I’m not sure how to try it out.
Anyway, with Dropbox syncing the GTG files between your computers, maybe Todo.txt Touch could be something to have a look at?

I’d like to try this, but please explain how to ‘symlink the ~/.local/share/gtg do the ~/Dropbox/gtg’
Thanks!
